Mission

HKARC has officially become a registered charity in the UK. We will focus on providing legal assistance, funding for lawyer fees, support for education and employment for political asylum seekers from Hong Kong, helping them to settle and live safely in the UK.

Trustees

Our Board of Trustees are active campaigners on human rights and Hong Kong's freedoms. The trustees have oversight of the operations of HKARC.

Benedict Rogers

Benedict Rogers is a human rights activist and writer. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch, Senior Analyst for East Asia at the international human rights organisation CSW, co-founder and Chair of the UK Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, a member of the advisory group of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a member of the advisory group of the Stop Uyghur Genocide Campaign, co-founder of the International Coalition to Stop Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea and a trustee of several other organisations. He is a regular speaker around the world, has testified at hearings in the US Congress and the British, European, Canadian and Japanese Parliaments, and is a regular contributor to international media, including the BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Post, The Diplomat, Foreign Policy and The Spectator. He is the author of six books, and has an MA in China Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and a BA in History and Politics from Royal Holloway, University of London. He has lived in China, Hong Kong, East Timor and Washington, DC and is now based in London.

Nicola Macbean

Nicola is the Director at The Rights Practice, a charity she founded in 2002 that bridges the gap between human rights law and everyday practice in China. She is the former Director of the Great Britain-China Centre. She was educated at the University of Cambridge, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fudan University and London University. She has an LLM in Human Rights and degrees in social anthropology and economics of education. Nicola has been an Independent Custody Visitor and was a Trustee of BOND, the UK membership body for NGOs working in international development (2008-14).

Thomas Fung

Thomas Fung has been living in the U.K. since 2012 and works as an accountant in a British accountancy practice. Since 2020, Thomas has been an active member of the U.K.’s Hong Kong civil society, advocating for human rights and community support. He is a co-founder and director of Bonham Tree Aid CIC, a community interest company dedicated to providing financial assistance to families and individuals who have been imprisoned or are on remand for defending rights and freedoms in Hong Kong.

Fermi Wong

Fermi Wong is the founder of Hong Kong Unison, a pioneer advocating for racial equality in Hong Kong. During her tenure, she advocated legislation to prohibit racial discrimination, worked to change the public education system, and challenged vocational training policies, ensuring equal opportunities and rights for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. She actively participated in the democracy movement in Hong Kong and served as the convener of the Human Rights Group under the Civil Human Rights Front.

In late 2020, Wong moved to the UK and quickly established various non-profit organizations and CIC (Community Interest Company) with like minded colleagues, such as the Hong Kong Umbrella Community (HKUC) and Mingle Cafe, to serve the displaced Hong Kong community in the UK. She also serves on the boards of various non-profit organizations. Wong hopes that Hong Kong people in the UK can not only maintain their identity and spirit but also integrate into British society fully and meaningfully and contribute to the community.

Benjamin Lee

Benjamin Lee is a community leader and event producer based in East London, promoting East and Southeast Asian community-building through cultural and music events.
